Step across the crystal clear river and enter a little piece of paradise, with the sound of water never far away.

Sweeping lawns surround the converted medieval priory that Maud Russell made her home in the 1930s. She brought artists, writers and designers here to relax, have fun, and make work inspired by Mottisfont's past, such as Rex Whistler's extraordinary trompe l'oeil drawing room. Discover stories of creativity, conflict, love and loss in a house full of surprises, and see how art is once again bringing Mottisfont to life, through up to five major exhibitions in the top-floor art gallery a year, including a family-focused show in the summer holidays. Mottisfont also houses a permanent 20th-century art collection, gifted by Derek Hill.

Outside, carpets of spring bulbs, walled gardens, rich autumn leaves and a colourful winter garden create a feast for the senses all year. The world-famous collection of old-fashioned roses flowers here once a year in June.

There are free daily guided walks and talks, and seasonal events throughout the year. There are spaces to run, jump and play, and always something for families to do, including energetic activity trails in school holidays.

You can refresh your taste buds with a trip to the Old Kitchen or Coach House Cafés, or treat yourself in the shop, where you'll find a wide range of gifts, treats and plants inspired by the gardens.

Mottisfont also looks after 1600 acres of woodland and tenanted farmland in the local area, including Stockbridge Down and Marsh, and Curbridge Nature Reserve. The wider estate is a wonderful place to explore, take a relaxing walk and take in the sights of some of Hampshire's most glorious countryside.
