Jane Austen was born in Hampshire, spent a lot of her time living in Hampshire and was laid to rest in Hampshire too. To this day, her legacy lives on through her literature and adaptations for film and television. Added to this, you can find annual events and one-off events dedicated to Jane Austen, including themed weeks, dances, talks and performances of some of her works.
Throughout the year, a number of events and activities such as exhibitions, tours, talks, performances and much more, are held to celebrate Jane Austen’s life across the county. Many of which take place at Jane Austen’s House museum in Chawton, where Jane lived for many years.

A must-do for anyone with a passion for Jane Austen is a visit to Jane Austen’s House in Chawton. This small house and garden contains fascinating insights into Jane’s life and some of the inspiration behind her works.
Just a short stroll away, Chawton House offers further links to Jane Austen as it was the home of Jane’s brother, Edward.
Jane Austen died at the age of 41 in Winchester. Her body was laid to rest in Winchester Cathedral.
