About
We are delighted to announce the arrival of our newest fine dining train, The Royal Wessex. Launching this spring, it will run on Sunday lunchtimes on limited dates during the year.
Thanks to our acclaimed caterers, Lemon Stone Events, guests can enjoy a contemporary take on the traditional Sunday Roast. Relax in the sumptuous comfort of our first class carriages, admire the South Downs countryside and savour a gastronomic 3 course lunch created using seasonal, locally sourced ingredients. There will also be an extensive wine menu including a locally sourced sparkling wine.
The original Royal Wessex service was originally launched by British Railways on 3rd May 1951. It was one of a number of named trains introduced to commemorate the Festival of Britain of that year, and transported people from the South Coast to the festival in London. The train was normally hauled by a "Merchant Navy" or "West Country" class locomotive and used a dedicated set of the newly designed all-steel standard "Mark1" carriages, which are still used on the Watercress Line today.
You can relive the same ambience today in our Pullman-style carriages with the warm ambience of richly upholstered seats, original wooden interiors, cosy table lamps in the windows, curtains, and tables with white damask cloths. Be it a family celebration, a special get-together or an romantic two-some, it will be an unforgettable experience.
