Don’t make plans for hibernation just yet, there are plenty of exciting events happening this January in Hampshire to get 2024 started with a bang – here’s where to find the fun.

Family events in January

Winter Woodland Lights at the Hawk Conservancy Trust switches on from 12 – 24 January 2024 where, after exploring the beautiful woodland light trail, visitors will be treated to a breathtaking evening owl flying display set against the glorious glowing trees. Winchester Science Centre & Planetarium has plenty of events to rocket your way through January. There’s Brontosaurus-sized fun until 21 January with The Dino Show before the brrrreathtaking Zero Degrees returns from 27 January. Pink Floyd: The Dark Side of the Moon celebrates 50 years of the legendary English rock band with sounds and visuals in the Planetarium, and star spotters can gaze in amazement at Night Sky Live at Winchester Science Centre & Planetarium on 11 January.

From the sleek and stylish Bessie to the futuristic Whomobile and a menacing Dalek, the National Motor Museum's new collection at Beaulieu marks the 60th anniversary of the British sci-fi series, Doctor Who with its special exhibition from now until the end of February 2024.

Catch the magic of the Christmas Journey to the North Pole at Mottisfont near Romsey until 7 January 2024 before Father Christmas and his elves return home for a hard-earned New Year break.

And Portsmouth on Ice continues into the first week of the New Year at the city’s Guildhall Square with a last chance to spin some seasonal shapes on the ice until 7 January 2024.

Evening events in January

Expect regency events aplenty over the coming year in anticipation of the 250-year anniversary of the birth of famed author, and Hampshire resident, Jane Austen in 2025. Starting 2024 in true Austen-tatious fashion is the Jane Austen Birthday Ball at the historic Alton Assembly Rooms on 13 January.

Mark Scotland’s traditional January celebration at Kimbridge Barn near Romsey on 26 January with a special Burns Night Ball bringing Scottish merriment in the form of a Celtic feast to the backdrop of bagpipes and a live Ceilidh band washed down with a wee dram from The Little Whisky Shop in Stockbridge.

And continue the New Year party celebrations with the Watercress Line’s Steam Illuminations pop anthems taking its final journeys of the season on 5 and 6 January 2024.

Theatre and shows in January

The Hat Fair, Winchester’s wonderfully wacky festival of outdoor arts, returns to the stage on 21 January with Hat Fair Cabaret at Theatre Royal Winchester for a night of comedy cabaret surprises with international artists, circus tricksters, magnificent magicians, live music, and crazy comedy.

Prepare to be blown away with the sensational new show: Circus of Horrors: Dr Haze's Cabaret of Curiosities at O2 Guildhall Southampton on 20 January and Kings Theatre Portsmouth on 23 January with beautifully bizarre circus acts.

Dancing Queens will delight in the international smash-hit ABBA tribute show bringing the Swedish quartet’s number-one hits to the stage with Thank You For The Music at the Mayflower Theatre Southampton on 4 January and Portsmouth Guildhall on 20 January.

Great news for Elvis fans, the 20th anniversary tour featuring a full cast of West End talent comes to Theatre Royal Winchester with The Elvis Years at Theatre Royal Winchester on 31 January.

Aha! Oho! Little ones will be a bit less bored with Tall Stories' enchanting adaptation of The Gruffalo's Child at New Theatre Royal Portsmouth from 15 to 17 January.

And follow the yellow brick road to the Mayflower Theatre in Southampton to catch Dorothy, Toto, and friends in The Wizard of Oz from 16 to 21 January.

Wellness events in January

Fulfil the resolution to make some time for yourself with some New Year wellness. The Winter Yoga & Wellness Retreat Day at Hale Park on 20 January will be a day of relaxation in front of the log fire with yoga, Pilates, and sumptuous lunch all within the tranquil grounds of the beautiful Hale Park Estate in the New Forest.
