About
To celebrate Heckfield's thousands of tulips springing up this April - from Belle Epoque, Apricot Delight, Queen of the night and Exotic Emperor to Raspberry Ripple, Green River, Sweet Impression, Brownie, Sweetheart, Poco Loco and Rococo varieties - they will be hosting two special botanical art classes.
Tulips - with their deceptively simple form and their stunning range of colours - have long been a favourite flower for artists to paint. Spend a morning or afternoon learning how to paint a tulip using the traditional watercolour technique for botanical illustration.
The event will be suitable for all abilities, including beginners and even those who have always wanted to try but haven't picked up a paintbrush since schooldays. We will use a step by step system to ensure that everyone ends up with a painting they can be proud of. Two tutors, Mary Ellen Taylor and Louise Young, will be on hand so that you will get guidance as you need it.
All materials will be provided but they ask you to bring a sketch book (A4 or A5 cartridge paper) and an HB pencil or similar. If you have favourite watercolour brushes or a handheld magnifying glass please feel free to bring them.
Each event will begin with a look at the Tulip in Botanical art. We will take a look at the structure of the Tulip and you can then choose to draw your own Tulip on A4 paper or use our lightly pre-drawn example. We will continue with some colour mixing on practice sheets, and then move on to paint our Tulips with demonstrations of each step by the tutors. Those who wish can continue to add some extra botanical details to their paintings to produce a Tulip study sheet.
