The Emirates America’s Cup World Series (ACWS) event in Portsmouth, taking place in June 2020. As Official Presenting Partner of the ACWS Portsmouth, Emirates has helped secure the event during which world-class America’s Cup sailors will return to the Solent for a thrilling preliminary regatta from 4th to 7th June 2020 as part of the competition to win the oldest sporting trophy in the world.
The 2020 America’s Cup World Series will see all participating teams race their AC75 America’s Cup class yachts. The first ACWS event will take place in Cagliari, Sardinia from April 23 to 26 2020, the second in Portsmouth, then concluding in Auckland as part of the Christmas Race from December 17-20. The ACWS is then followed by the Prada Cup Challenger Selection Series which will determine which foreign yacht club will take on the Defender of the America’s Cup, Emirates Team New Zealand, in the 36th America’s Cup Match presented by Prada from 6 to 21 March 2021 in Auckland.
For 2020 there will be more racing than ever before, with five international teams battling it out over four days of events. What's more, organisers have promised to put fans at the heart of the competition - with all the high-performance action taking place close to the shore.
It's not just about the four main days of action, though. Competitiors will take to the water from 31 May 2020, to get those all-important final training sessions in - and to test the waters, quite literally - so they're ready to attack the course fully from 4 June 2020.
The race course has been designed with a windward leeward configuration - with an upwind start to ensure a conventional match race pre-start.
As in previous iterations, there will be a host of different options available for anyone who wants to catch the racing live. In addition to a ticketed Race Village on the shores of Southsea Common, there will be a free-to-view area for those outside. Everyone catching the action from within the Race Village will see all the goings on in close up, thanks to jumbo viewing screens and live commentators. There will also be a host of America’s Cup exhibits and content to enjoy - whether you're a sailing fanatic or just dipping your toes in.
