The Rifleman’s Museum is one of Winchester’s six military museums, located at Peninsula Barracks on Romsey Road. Housed in the former Rifle Depot headquarters building, the Museum spans two floors, covering the history of Riflemen from 1741 right through to the story and legacy of The Rifles, the current regiment.
Notable exhibits include The Waterloo Diorama, a 25 square metre model of the Battle of Waterloo featuring almost 30,000 model soldiers and horses, with a five-minute sound and light commentary guiding visitors through the events of the battle; thousands of medals commemorating the bravery of riflemen throughout history including thirty Victoria Crosses; an extensive collection of unique and historically significant weapons including the iconic Baker Rifle, a sporting gun once owned by Napoleon’s brother, and the swords of Sir John Moore; uniforms from all periods including the only surviving 95th Rifles Officer’s uniform and the Duke of Wellington’s Rifle Brigade court dress, and a diverse collection of paintings, drawings, and artwork.
